He's a lover, not a fighter

First-class shiner notwithstanding. Not a bar fight, just an unfortunate close encounter with a table top at Tia Rosa's for Angie's belated birthday dinner.

Luckily, he seems none the worse for the wear. And it does satisfy my latent curiosity as to what, exactly, he would look like in purple eyeshadow.

Gonna be scarce this week, too

We've got family in town, folks, so we've spent the last several days just playing and relaxing. I anticipate more of the same this week, so in the meantime here's a little taste of our weekend.

We had the Dixon family photos taken this time by a Certified Professional Third Party Photographer, which was a novel and overwhelmingly positive experience, relatively speaking. Of course, the photos did still involve 17 people - including 6 kids - so it wasn't an unqualified success, but it was definitely faster and more efficient than in years past. Hopefully we'll get some good shots out of it!

For now, here's a couple that David took before we got underway. Devlin with his new backpack (he starts Young Learner's Kindergarten in 2 weeks! Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!)

And here's (most of) the cousins together, making mischief and looking adorable as usual. Gavin was asleep, and Chloe hadn't arrived yet, but these four were having a great time.

A comedy of errors

Let's face it, that's mostly what Sundays are like around here. Sometimes it's zany and exciting - a thrill a minute!

Sometimes it's so scary we can hardly stand to look, so we just close our eyes and jump:

And once in a while, we at least *look* like we have it all together. We never really do, but we kinda look like we do. And that's good enough, I reckon.

I'd like to defer to my excellent husband

I have a post coming up, but I'd like to wait a day or two and in the meantime, direct all of my tens and tens of readers to David's blog. He's got big news, and I want to make sure everyone gets a chance to congratulate him. He's an amazing, dedicated, hardworking, fun, supportive husband and father, and this is one of the biggest accomplishments of his life. I am SO proud!

His new weight loss goal is 185, and he's hoping to be there by September. Let's just say this: I'm gaining weight almost as fast as he's losing it, and if I pass him going up on his way down - pregnant or not - then I'm probably going to kill myself.

Are you wishing you had plans for tomorrow night? Wondering what to have for dinner? Lucky for you, I am hosting a Pampered Chef party at my house at 6:30 pm and it's going to be fun. I've been cleaning my kitchen all week, and I don't think it's looked this good since we moved in.

If you're curious to see my sparkling new stove, or wondering just how many people I can fit in my little kitchen (I have a feeling we'll be testing it to the limit tomorrow!) then come on over. We're having Aloha Pizza and a yummy dessert involving Snickers bars. Or, check out the website and you can order right from there - just put my name in the "hostess" spot and shop til you drop.

By the seat of our collective pants

Well, for once, my husband was the one with the Crazy Plan this weekend! Usually I'm the one hatching wild ideas to take off at a moment's notice and visit This Place or That Place, but Saturday morning he just woke up and decided he'd had enough of the heat and we were going to Prescott.

So we went.

When we got there it was raining cats and dogs so we ducked into the world-famous Prescott Gateway Mall. Their playground, though humble, got the Eve and Devlin Dixon stamp of approval.

Gotta get that girl some bloomers or something.

We ate at the Taj Mahal, which came in a close second in our very scientific Arizona Indian Dining Rankings. Devlin was admiring the beautiful scenery while driving around town and was very insistent that he wanted to go "play on the mountains" before bedtime. We got lucky and found a little corner of forest that wasn't too muddy.

The kids built a "fire pit" aka "big pile of sticks".

As it happens, Eve had been avoiding doing her potty business all day long, and the moment arrived when she just could not wait any more. Of course, we were in the forest at that moment, far away from all modern potty facilities. After at least 5 aborted attempts, she was able to cast aside her ladylike sensibilities and poop on the ground. David, being the Seasoned Outdoorsman that he is, buried the evidence with a pointy stick, but Eve was either utterly elated with or completely traumatized by her accomplishment and could talk about nothing else the rest of the day. This is the place:

Sunday morning, the rain had abated and we seized our chance to take the kids on their first boat ride, on Lynx Lake. It was gorgeous, perfect weather and there were even some friendly "wack wacks" on the lake.

Thanks for the family adventure, guys! Looking forward to so many more.

She did really well today, actually! The hat's a little quirky, but overall I don't think I could have done better myself.
